Deva Hopewell is a rebellious teenager. She is the daughter of Lucas Hood and Carrie. Her step-father is Mayor Gordon Hopewell. She has a younger brother, Max. She's the granddaughter of Mr. Rabbit.
Deva was born and raised in Banshee, Pennsylvania, a town which she describes is filled with thugs. On the outside, she is a foul mouthed, ill- behaved and reckless teenager who engages in dangerous and illegal activities like shoplifting, vandalism and drugs. Underneath it all, she is actually a smart, strong, brave and kind-hearted young woman.
After she finds out that her mom has been lying about everything, Deva doesn´t want to have anything to do with her. When her mom is sentenced for 30 days in prison and her father (Gordon) goes off the rails, she is left to pick up the pieces of her broken family and to care for her sick younger brother all by herself.
At the end of season 2, Carrie reveals that Hood is Deva´s biological father, not Gordon. In season 3, she and Hood are trying get to know each other and they even manage to bond. She is still getting into trouble like doing drugs, pick-pocketing and starting a relationship with a rebellious and violent boy named Charlie. Gordon and Carrie eventually team up together and get Deva home from Charlie´s house. When Gordon dies at the end of season 3, Hood consoles her.
In season 4, we learn that Deva and Max have been taken into custody by the state and sent to live with Gordon´s parents after Carrie broke the terms of her probation. Job catches Deva breaking into Carrie´s house for a surprise visit and shortly after they are being attacked by Proctor´s men, led by Nina Cruz. Job gives Deva a gun and she hides under a car in the garage. When one of the attackers pulls her from under the car she shoots him twice and kills him. At the end of season 4 she tells her father (Hood) that she is going to college in the fall because she wants something normal in her life. They promise to see each other soon.
